Responding to a shortage in theatre capacity and an increasing demand in programmed surgical work, the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust commissioned a new suite of operating theatres and ancillary offices.
The project involved the creation of two new operating theatres, designed to an ultra-clean specification with extract canopies and service pendants for critical orthopedic and cardiac surgery, to compliment the existing facilities.
The Twin Theatres design also allowed for specific circulation protocols to achieve a required level of infection control; all ancillary accommodation required for orthopedic surgery and a new recovery bay adjacent to the new facility. The new building also had its own dedicated service plant accommodation and is linked to the existing hospital building and the new radio-diagnostic building via two mini bridge links at first floor.
A requirement of the building contract was that there would be no disruption to the programmed operations in the existing theatres adjacent to the site. This was successfully achieved by careful liaison with the hospitals surgical team.
