SHA were appointed for the refurbishment and internal remodelling works at Maddox House. An existing 1960's office space across 5 floors (including a basement) to transform to create an educational AP Free School facility, and to meet the need for good quality alternative provision in south-west Birmingham.
Externally the proposals incorporated the conversion of fourteen place car park adjoining the rear courtyard of the building to accommodate external student social/dining space. A new recreational space created at the rear of the building and new cycle parking and landscaping provided on the front of the building facing Bristol Road South. The academy has been housed with modern internal finishes fit for purpose, and energy efficient accommodation fulfilling the needs of a 140 pupil school and providing the school with area future pupil expansion. SHA produced the graphics/wayfinding, interior colour schemes and material choices as well as the fixed and loose furniture scheduling.
SHA aimed to design a secure, welcoming, modern environment where pupils with differing strengths and weaknesses can be given the opportunity to succeed and transform their lives to secure good progression routes.
