Competition entry for internal refurbishment and re-facade of the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre.
The aim of our entry was to improve connectivity to Hippodrome Square, stimulating activity throughout the day. The cafe bar turns to face the entrance with tables spilling out onto the Square. A continuous curve of the bar opens into the small informal performance space. By opening up the interior, it becomes a flexible cafe/bar space, performance and waiting area and can be easily reconfigured throughout the day and evening.
We explored the opportunity to make a theatrical gesture with the new facade, opening the frontage onto the square like opening stage curtains with the cafe thrusting out into the square and the potential to produce a flexible facade which can be altered and reimagined like a stage set.
