Training Centres for LFB (Bid)
London

Seymour Harris Architecture were appointed by Mansell as part of the Balfour Beatty group to work on a bid for two new state of the art training colleges for London Fire Brigade to be used to advise and provide all the necessary training and learning support to both the individual fire-fighter and the organisation. The bid encompassed two sites in London a Primary Training Venue in Dagenham as well as a Secondary Training Venue in Mitcham. The two venues together with the processes and systems supporting the training provision looked to constitute the London Fire Brigade College of Fire and Community Safety. The technical Training zones incorporated included: The Breathing Apparatus (BA) and Real Fire Training (RFT) facility The RFT facility is an extensive, multi-level internal firefighting training area which utilises Class A combustible live fires to create realistic hot fire conditions which do not release smoke or fumes into the atmosphere. The innovative design of the RFT facility incorporates dry risers, access to a building facade of six floors with openings for ladder pitches (on four faces), smoke lobbies, an operational lift shaft, water mains with hydrants and the ability to collect water runoff and recycle. The BA gallery is a multi-compartment, internal firefighting training area that can facilitate deep seated firefighting search and rescue operations and basement incidents. The fire behaviour and LPG flashover area provides a range of rooms delivering flashover demonstrations and flashover simulations to facilitate the development of defensive firefighting techniques.
